(Submitted by Dixie Cocagne)

More than 30 seniors and guests from St. Francis traveled in June to Ypsilanti for breakfast together and then a visit to the Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run Airport.  The American diner décor of the Bomber Restaurant on Michigan Avenue provided the perfect beginning for learning about the production of the B-24 bombers during World War II.  Every inch of space on the walls and ceiling of the dining room is covered by decals, posters, uniforms, and models of the planes which were built just five miles east.

Volunteer guides at the Yankee Air Museum often had to shout over the noise of construction and restoration in the building, where other volunteers worked to prepare acquisitions for display:  a Douglas C-47 transport from 1945, a B-17G Flying Fortress, a B-25D Mitchell similar to the one used in Jimmy Doolittle’s raid of Tokyo in April 1942, and a 1943 Stinson Reliant V-77.

Several seniors shared memories of their connections to Willow Run or to the planes produced there.  They were encouraged to become part of the Oral History Project of the Library of Congress and to see the interviews already submitted to www.loc.gov/vets.
